A variety of animal species utilize the ultraviolet (UV) component of sun light as their environmental cues, whereas human beings have been thought to lack the UV sensor. I have recently discovered a novel UV photosensory protein in mice, suggesting the presence of UV photoreception also in human beings. This study is aimed to investigate the putative UV photosensory protein of human beings as well as the physiological role(s) of mammalian UV photoreception.
